  1. Katelynn Dalton says:

Hey! My name is Katelynn Dalton, I’m 17 years old and I just graduated from Owen high school here in Black Mountain. While being at Owen, I got accepted into Johnson & Wales University and AB Tech’s Baking and Pastry Arts program, and I was able to take Foods I and Foods II in Ashley Beauregard’s class. I never had below a B in either class, and also made the highest exam score in Foods I (98/100). During foods II, we were able to learn more about the business side of the many different food related fields, and even got to experience it ourselves. We had a business we called “The Sweet Shoppe” and we sold handmade Christmas themed sweets (reindeer cookies, candy cane marshmallow pops, etc.) to the faculty and staff, then made it ourselves in the foods classroom. The students in that class voted me to be the head person, below the teacher herself of course, to run our business. Delivering and preparing orders, checking on each group for accuracy, participation, and sanitation, keeping track of money, etc. I loved every minute of it! During that time, we had a few mini lessons on cake decorating and garnishes, I was fortunate enough to become ServSafe certified, and earn 2 college credits for AB Tech. For my graduation project, I worked with Stacy Cleary at Black Mountain Bakery and my topic was cake decorating. Stacy herself was so surprised at how easily I made everything look, and even wanted to keep one of my cakes I made while working with her in her bakery to sell. For the service learning part, I made a 3 tiered cake then donated it to the faculty and staff at Owen. Not only did I deliver and serve the cake to each teacher that came by, but I also spent 8 hours decorating it to make sure each department in the school was recognized. From the basic English and math to JROTC, theatre and Foods. All of this then lead to my best friend making a Facebook page for me called “KKs Cakes.” With all of this experience and praise for my work around me, I decided that being a cake decorator would be the absolute perfect career choice for me. I would love to hear back from you and to show you some of my work. Thank you for taking the time to read this, have a great day, and thank you in advance!
