The Cake Shop is for Sale! And We’re Throwing a Party!

Dearest Loved Ones,

It is with great excitement for the future- and with deep gratitude for the past- that I would like to share some really big news with you: I have decided to sell Short Street Cakes! I have long considered this move, and I know now that it is time. Each of you, my friends and family, employees, partners, colleagues, and customers, have stood by me and helped to make Short Street Cakes what it is today, and for that, I will always be grateful. Now I am asking for your help and support in finding the leader or leaders who will take the Cake Shop into its next phase of growth!

It has been almost nine years since that first summer on Short Street- when I began baking wedding cakes out of my home kitchen with baby Jasper underfoot. Those years will remain some of the sweetest (and also most challenging) of my life. It has been six years since I moved the business into the shop on Haywood Road, and embarked on the journey of owning a brick-and-mortar bakery, with all of the tears and joy that go along with working hard alongside some of the finest people humanity has ever wrought. It has been three years since Cake Ladies was published, and two years since I began teaching classes in entrepreneurship at Mountain Bizworks.

It is now time for Short Street Cakes to expand. We are absolutely bursting at the seams in our current space. We have never been stronger financially, our product consistency and quality has never been higher, and our systems are tried, true, and fully functional. We have a dedicated staff of nine highly-trained, competent and effective managers and bakers. We have secured the lease on the beautiful storefront space next to the shop, and the Cake Shop is perfectly poised to use the additional space to create a beautiful community café, as well as host events, classes, and have extra storage, office, and customer seating space.

It was in planning for this expansion that I came to realize: I am not the one who is meant to take Short Street Cakes into its next phase. I know that the Cake Shop needs and deserves a leader that will be singularly focused on the success of this expansion. I know that I love the Cake Shop, and I also know that my heart and my work is leading me in a different direction. Professionally I am being called to write, to travel, and to teach. My work teaching and coaching entrepreneurs at Mountain Bizworks and Birds Eye has been compelling, and exciting, and I want to be available for more of it. Spiritually I am being called to do more direct social justice work. Personally I feel the call to grow more food at home, to spend more time walking out-of-doors and traveling with my family. And I have come to realize that in order to commit myself fully to this path of professional, personal, and creative growth I must lovingly let go of the Cake Shop.

I believe that there is someone, somewhere, with the dream, the resources, and the capacity to take Short Street Cakes, make it theirs, and grow it to it’s fullest potential. I ask for the support of the community and the guidance of Spirit in finding this person or family, and for a smooth transition that will lead to the highest and best outcome for both parties, as well as the benefit of the staff of the Cake Shop and the community at large.

So, dear friends, please consider this a call for offers. I will be selling the business by owner, at least to start, in hopes of reaching those in our community who may be interested first. I hope to have a transition plan in place by the summer, though I’m in no hurry and happy to wait as long as it takes to find the best fit (I know that it is against conventional wisdom for a business to inform its customers and employees of a change like this, but to me, I wouldn’t feel right making this kind of change without the full participation of the community that has made Short Street Cakes what it is).

CUSTOMERS PLEASE NOTE: there will be absolutely no break in continuity in regards to orders, wedding cakes, or ongoing contracts. We ask for your continued support as customers as well. As a testament to their integrity, all of Short Street Cakes’ staff members have committed to staying on through this transition. To honor their commitment and ensure the best outcome for them, I intend to participate in a thorough, thoughtful, and deliberate process of transition, supporting the new owners every step of the way. Interested parties can contact me for confidentiality agreement and an overview at

To each of you, my family, my community, I extend my deepest, most sincere, most humble gratitude. Again, I say: there would be no Short Street Cakes without you. What a wonderful dream it is!

With love, appreciation, and hope and excitement for the future,

Jodi Rhoden

PS: Please join us to celebrate the amazing past 6 years we have shared together, and toast the future at Short Street Cakes’ 6th Anniversary Carnival Circus Mardi Gras Party and Benefit Raffle! Sugar Skulls at Short Street Cakes!

You are invited to join us again as we celebrate the Mexican holiday of Los Dias de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) by creating authentic Sugar Skulls for the November 1st and 2nd holidays. Every day from Tuesday, October 14th and continuing through Sunday, November 2nd, Short Street Cakes will make and sell blank and decorated sugar skulls for sale, and will provide a decoration station stocked with icings, sequins, foil, and glitter for individuals and families to decorate skulls as gifts to their friends and families or in remembrance of their loved ones. Sugar skulls will be priced at $5, with half of the proceeds going to benefit COLA, (Coalicion de Organizaciones de Latino-Americanos), an organization advocating for immigrant’s rights in Western North Carolina.

We offer this service in reverence for those loved ones in our lives who have passed, and to offer a space for our community to engage in a creative process to honor, remember, and dialogue with the guiding, benevolent spirits of our ancestors. Short Street Cakes will again offer a discount to school groups such as Hall Fletcher Elementary student groups who visit the Cake Shop to learn about the cultural tradition of honoring loved ones and ancestors through the ancient art of altar decoration and decorating skulls. Also, on November 1st, we are again honored to join our friend Glo, who will be hosting an interactive art altar for Dias de los Muertos in the courtyard of Mayfel’s restaurant, downtown, from 5pm to 2am.

End-of-Summer News from Short Street Cakes!

Hi Friends! Here’s the content of our most recent monthly newsletter! To subscribe, go HERE. (we will never email you more than once a month, and we will never share or sell your contact info to anyone, not ever, no way, no how.)
Summer Joy!
Dear Friends,

I hope that your summer has been vibrant, beautiful, relaxing and fun! Ours has been fantastic, though seemingly short (Jasper’s school, Hall Fletcher Elementary, launched their Balanced Calendar this year, so his first day of school was July 17th!). I also had the incredible, life-changing opportunity to travel to South Africa and Zimbabwe for almost three weeks with my mother and two friends earlier this month, and I am so grateful for that time of learning, both about the natural and human history of Africa, as well as for the precious time spent with family. I owe a deep debt of gratitude to my love, Duncan, for keeping the home fires burning while I was away, and to Short Street Cake’s dynamic and talented General Manager, Jessica Rosenkoetter, who not only “managed” but flourished as a leader in my absence. And of course, I’m extremely thankful to the smart, delightful, and capable crew at the Cake Shop for seamlessly and beautifully executing the responsibilities of the cake shop with grace and style. I’m now looking forward to settling in to another gorgeous West Asheville Autumn! Blessings abound. We look forward to seeing you in and around the Cake Shop this fall, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support. With Love and Gratitude! –Jodi

Our New Website Launches NEXT WEEK!

On September 10th, Short Street Cakes will launch our new improved website! Please be patient as our website and email may be down for several hours during that time, but when it’s all up and running we will have an even sleeker, easier-to-use, updated website with a very user-friendly mobile version. Endless thanks to my dear friend Michael Frey of Frey Art and Design, who has singlehandedly designed the Short Street Cakes brand from day 1. We’re so lucky to have such a talented artist and wonderful friend on our team! The new website will also feature cake photography from the talented Ryan Prenger of Pearl to Moon Photography!

Harvest Records Celebrates 10 Years!

We’re so proud of our friends and neighbors, Mark and Matt of Harvest Records, who celebrated the 10 year anniversary of their landmark East-West Asheville record store with Transfigurations II: three days of music across three venues and two towns!  Short Street Cakes is pleased as punch to have been a sponsor of Transfigurations II, and to be a fan of the work that Harvest does for music, culture, and community in our beloved town and beyond. Cheers and Congratulations, Guys! Here’s to another 10 and many more.  xoxo

Word on the Street:

There’s lots of big changes coming to our little hillside in the coming months! With last year seeing the addition of two beloved neighbors on our block, Urban Orchard Cider Bar and Wood & Spoon, the introduction of the soon-to-be-implemented Form-Based Code zoning, and of course, the beginning of construction on the transformational New Belgium Brewery, our neighborhood is starting to feel like a bona-fide boom town. The streets are getting re-paved, sidewalks are soon to be built, bike lanes are getting striped, and construction on the new doughnut shop across the street, Hole, is almost complete. Add to that the new Hop Ice Cream production and tasting room being opened down the street, and our stretch of Haywood Road will have earned the name some have begun to call it: Sugar Alley! We welcome our new neighbors with open arms, and hope that our community can continue to grow and serve both our residents and guests with love, and in the spirit of community.

Farewell, Kaylee!

This month we said goodbye to one of our beloved Cake Ladies, Kaylee Cubeta! Kaylee moved back to Florida to pursue a graduate degree in nursing, while pursuing her passion for cake decorating too. Kaylee, we will miss you, and we will miss your insanely awesome cake skills! We love you, and we will always be here for you! Thank you for being a part of the Short Street Cakes family, we wish you Luck and Love on your journey. All the best!

Jodi, Jess, Lucy, Duggels, Olga, Karen, Chloe, Alexandra, and Sarah!

Congratulations Horse + Hero and Big Love Fest!

Last Sunday saw another successful Big Love Fest! After 7 years of happily slinging cupcakes at the Big Crafty Family of events– (Summer Big Crafty, Winter Big Crafty, and Big Love Fest), every fest feels like a family reunion. I have so much love and admiration for my friends Justin Rabuck and Brandy Bourne (and their awesome little one, my buddy Ellis), who, not only bust out the three massive festivals every year, but who have also had their shop,Horse + Hero, up and running all summer to critical acclaim! We’re especially thankful that they have allowed Short Street Cakes to operate our Downtown Cupcake Kiosk there, where we bring fresh cupcakes every day for your downtown cupcake pleasure. Cheers, Justin and Brandy! We’re so proud of you!

Birds Eye Launches and Soars!

I am so pleased, proud, and excited to announce that the new Bird’s Eye Business Planning Classes will launch next week at Mountain Bizworks! Birds Eye is the entrepreneurial venture of veteran Business Developer Annie Price, who has taken the beloved Foundations in Business curriculum, updated it, and is offering the classes to new and existing entrepreneurs in our community. My first Birds Eye class launches on Tuesday,September 16th, at 9am at Mountain Bizworks’ downtown Asheville offices. After a long, difficult winter following a  liquidity crunch at Bizworks last fall, I could not have imagined a more positive outcome for the future of Asheville’s business planning and training community. I’m honored to continue my work as a teacher with Birds Eye and as a coach with Bizworks. Onward and Upward!
